A New Challenge

People tell me that they like my essays on the chapters of the Tao Te Ching. If you are new here and you haven’t read them yet, you can see the entire list here. Since this blog is called Tao Te Ching Daily, I am always looking for ways to weave the chapters back through our lives but in unique ways.

So I have decided to do an experiment.

If you are a fellow blogger and you enjoy reading my essays, how about posting one of your own? I have posted the first chapter of the Tao Te Ching and a Mr. Linky entry box below.  I invite you to read the chapter and then post your own response to it on your blog and then come back here and add your link. If I get enough response on this experiment, I will do it again. I might even make it a regular thing.

I think Lao Tzu would have wanted it that way…

The sage leads quietly indeed –
Accomplishing deeds in order that
the people will all say,
“We did it”.
~Chapter 17, Tao Te Ching

Chapter One of the Tao Te Ching

The Tao that can  be told is not the Eternal Tao.
The name that can be named is not the Eternal Name.

Nothingness is the Origin of Heaven and Earth.
Beingness is the Mother of the Ten Thousand Things.

When you are free of desire, you will understand the Essence of your life.
When you identify with your desires, you will observe the manifestations of your life.

Both contain the deepest secrets arising from the dark unknown, the Doorway to the Mysteries of Life.

  4. This is a great idea, Amy. I’m in! The post isn’t written yet, but I did add my name to your Mr. Linky tool. Can you share a little bit about where you found this and how it works?
Nanette Levin recently posted…Think you can write? Money says you can.My Profile

    • Sure. It is at http://www.misterlinky.net. I paid $5 for a year’s subscription to use it. You just type in some basic info and it gives you some html code to paste on your website. Pretty easy. You should add the link to the direct page that has the post after you write it, but don’t worry about it. Just re-add your post when it is written.

    • I just realized that I have the ability to edit the links so email me your updated link once you write it and I will update it on the back end.

  5. I love this Amy – what a fun challenge. I’m going to sit with the verse and see what comes forward so I can play too.

    • I was hoping you would play along, Deborah. I know that you are doing Glue It Tuesdays but I just could not help myself. Tao Tuesdays just rolls off the tongue!

  7. Amy, this should be an interesting project. I just tried my hand at Chapter 1 here: http://ralstoncreekreview.com/chapter-1-im-sorry-you-must-be-out-of-your-mind/

  8. Hi Amy. Louis let me know about your blog, thought I’d drop in. I’ve contributed to the cause at http://cascadianwanderer.wordpress.com/tao-te-ching/ If your idea snowballs you will be the one which creates two which creates ten thousand… 😉

  9. Sorry about the double post, it was unintended as far as I know. First there was One, then there was Two… How do these things happen? 😮

  11. Amy – as promised, I’ve posted my (atypical as usual) response to the Chapter One challenge. This was a great idea – and a lot of fun for me (makes me stretch). One of the things that occurred to me as I was writing this blog post is the familiarity you now have with each line of this text. That’s an incredible place to be. Anyway, here’s my very non-scholarly reaction to Chapter One of the Tao: http://nanettelevin.com/lao-tzu-could-be-a-marketing-icon/

  12. Chapter 5 is done. Should I be posting these notices elsewhere? Let me know. And as always, thank you, Amy.

  18. Hello Amy,
Chapter 19 whacked me across the shoulders and for now I don’t seem to be anywhere other than where I am. Which right now is here.

    • If you wait for me, you may sometimes be disappointed. lol… 81 weeks is a year and a half. If I skip weeks, it could be several years of this Tao Tuesdays. I have criticized myself for not being consistent but then I think about this long timeframe and I make room for my mistakes. I love how you and Bob have run with it and it has become a part of your work now. That is the beauty of this work. We are fluid also. Sometimes a log blocks a river and then the river learns to move around it. Sometimes the log breaks free and floats down the river. Neither is bad or wrong – it just is.

  20. The middle way consistently suggests moderation in all things, Amy, including consistency. And if you regard yourself as not being consistent there is always the option to look on the bright side and affirm your consistency by being consistently inconsistent… (Sorry, I just revisited the Dalai Lama explaining how everything is relative. I’ve fallen off my perspective and can’t get back up…)

Speaking of things breaking free, I’ve posted something I’d like to share which breaks free of the chapter study. It’s here:

    http://cascadianwanderer.wordpress.com/reflection-upon-shards-in-the-mirror/

BTW – any post that ends with “- it just is.” (as your reply to Louis above does) is perfect! Oh, and one thing. Yes, Louis does run with it, smoothly and with grace and consistency. Yes, I do run with it, too, often into myself and other things as well. I tend to cut first and measure after, contrary to all my carpentry experience. As you say, that is the beauty of this work. There is plenty of room for all.
