I Ching #35 – Advancing

This post is #35 of 64 hexagrams in a series of posts about the I Ching, an ancient Taoist text that has many ties to the Tao Te Ching. For those of you new to this series, you may want to start by reading my post called “What is a Hexagram?” that helps to explain more about the general idea of the I Ching. If you are just starting this series, you may want to take a look at some of my other posts on the I Ching.

What a wonderful hexagram to focus on as I return from a rather generous gap from blogging! Have you ever had one of those days where it seems that everything is just so fortuitous? If so, then you have seen the blessing of hexagram #35. Take advantage, but do so with caution, as the fortunes that come so steadily can flip on a dime.

I am not saying that you should be waiting for a shoe to drop. A better response might be to bask in the gratitude that you feel with your good fortune. This is not just pure luck. This type of good fortune is both lucky circumstances and your proper planning. It is a special kind of good luck because you did good things to get yourself there. It’s a bit like when you invest in the right stock. If you hadn’t put the effort into investing, it would not have come to you, but since you did – you won big!

Eric and I just returned from a vacation to Clearwater, Florida. I feel like this hexagram is a perfect response to this trip! If we had not planned the trip, we would never have experienced such an amazing place. We loved it! Our resort was just steps from a gorgeous beach with white sands and even cabanas where you can put your feet up and get shade from the hot sun. We had great weather all week, with just a few short rain showers. We did not get sunburned because we waited until the second half of the trip to do our beach days and we were careful to use sunscreen when we were outside for longer periods of time. All of these things were a mixture of good luck and good planning, and it made for a great trip. (They aren’t always like that!)

Here are a few photos from our trip…

Left to right: Me, Eric, Bob (our main tour guide, in the back), Nicky (a student pilot) and Drew (her teacher). Bob said, “Feel free to move about the cabin.” I think he was kidding.

Eric surprised me by planning a hot air balloon trip. Neither of us had ever been on one! It was a lot of fun. We had great tour guides, who even outnumbered us in the basket! We even got to fly over a nudist colony and saw a guy mowing his lawn in the buff. Priceless.

We were in the balloon on the left. They coordinated their takeoff with another balloon from another company. Balloonists are tight. We learned that we were called “balloonatics” (fans of ballooning).

Eric took this shot while we were floating over a lake. That is the reflection of our own balloon in the water from way up.

The beach was gorgeous. Our nightly ritual was to watch the sunset, of course!

We ate pizza one night at Vicanis in Madeira Beach. I wonder where all these suitcases came from and why were they hanging on the ceiling. This place won the prize for best pizza and for weirdest decor!

Needless to say, I felt very fortunate to experience this trip. The I Ching responded with this wonderful hexagram. Thank you, Universe!
