Today is all about Solitude.

A few years ago, my mom, my daughter and I went to Judge C.R. Magney State Park in Minnesota – way up almost to the Canadian border. (Read this speech to see what a great guy Judge C.R. Magney was.) Inside the park is an incredible waterfall called Devil’s Cauldron. This huge waterfall flows into a hole in the rock. They have no idea where it goes. To get to the waterfall is about a mile-long walk through the woods and up and down some rather steep steps. It is one of my favorite places.

When I walk through the woods, it is my church – more than any church would ever be. When I walk, whether it is with friends or alone, I prefer silence rather than talking. It is a rare opportunity to soak in the energy of the silent trees and hear the birds chirping in their natural habitat.

Camping is another favorite thing. I don’t do it as much as I used to, but I would like to do it more this summer. The solitude of camping for me is not about less people, but it is about less noise – the kind of noise that we experience through television, newspapers and the Internet. It is about soaking up this gorgeous nature that exists all around us, but that we have separated ourselves from through modern utility.

  1. I think the silence has a magic all of its own. We live in a society where we have to say no to stimulus and often its rather difficult. Camping in nature (with no phone or wifi) allows for that separation. Nice piece Ame.

  2. love it. thanks, Amy. I am blessed to live in a peaceful place on the earth and to enjoy camping. so glad my family shares this.

  3. I love solitude. People mistake it for loneliness, which it is far from. In solitude, I can recharge. (But no more long, steep staircases for me, alas-an arthritic knee).
